Eddie Adams, Vietnam, 1968

This photo portrays realism and represents conflict and war. From looking at this picture you can tell that the man who has a gun pointed at him feels hurt and disorientated. I also feel that this man could have given up on life and had suicidal thoughts just by looking at him and the state he is in. There are people running about which shows the situation these people are in and how scared they must have felt.

There are soldiers, which shows war and the fact that they are on the streets looks like they are terrorising people and giving them a really hard time.

Documentary photos are observational and there are key points when taking documentary images such as:

Analyse

Exhaust perspective

Evaluate your locations

Take pictures in your mind

These are some of the key points.

Natural light is used but can be taken on a black and white film.

The kind of lenses used in documentary photography could vary from different types of lenses for e.g. maximum aperture; you would use this lens if you want a faster aperture.

Post production photoshop cant be used in documentary photography and is taken seriously if it is used. for e.g.

Portraiture :

Portrait photography is the photography of someone or a group of people that portrays an expression, mood and personality. The photograph is usually the persons face but sometimes the entie body and background or context could be included. subgenres could be: fashion, editorial, beauty, glamour etc. eric ryan anderson ethics

You can find portrait photography in a lot of places for e.g.

ID Badges

Magazines such as "VOGUE"

Wallets

Books

Websites

Google Images

Posters e.t.c.

Portrait photos are not normally natural but can be natural for e.g family portraits. They are controlled but can be observational. There is usually artificial light but in some portraits there is natural light depending on location and time of day.

The lenses used for portrait photos has a big impact on your portrait photos. A wide-angle, around 18 mm lens will capture quite a wider angle of view so more of the subjects surroundings will be in shot.

A telephoto which is over a 70 mm lens, captures quite a narrower angle of view and so less of the surroundings will appear in the photo. Also the focal length will affect the DOF which means Depth of field. The depth of field is the distance between the farthest and nearest object in a picture or scene that appear sharp in an image.

The wide-angle lens will capture more depth of field compared to the telephoto lens.  This is mainly the reason telephoto lenses are favored over wide-angle lenses for portraits, as the background becomes out of focus and make the people stand out more in a picture or scene.

This picture represents portraiture and diplays a lot of different emotions and characteristics. The person in this picture is happy which you can take from her laughing. Andy warhol has done a lot of celebrity portraits which could mean this person could be a celebrity; this could also show that this is how celebrities live by going to alot of parties or getting drunk as the person in this picture has a glass of alcohol and the way she looks , looks like she could be drunk.
